How to Avoid Getting Smelly Running Shoes

Many runners suffer the scourge of smelly running shoes and it’s basically down to sweat, pure and simple. The reason why sweaty feet tend to produce very smelly trainers is that the sweat that collects between your toes contains a certain bacteria which flourish in warm, moist conditions.

Here are 5 techniques to help you avoid suffering from smelly running shoes.

1.  Store your shoes properly. Keep your running shoes in a cool, dry place after you’ve used them, not near to any heat or cold source such as a radiator or a cold, damp garage. A good idea is to remove the insoles after use to reduce the chances of bacterial growth.

2.  Wear specialist running socks. Wearing a pair of good quality running socks can help to eliminate a large amount of the smell, because the fabric they’re made of helps to wick away sweat from the skins surface.

Synthetic blend socks allow your feet to breathe more easily, however cotton socks tend to become saturated when covered in sweat and won’t keep your skin dry.

3.  Alternate your running shoes. If you have a couple of pairs of running shoes, then it’s a good idea to switch between pairs every run. You’ll find that they’ll last longer and won’t get dirty or worn as fast. Make sure however that both shoes are a similar fit or ideally have two pairs of exactly the same model.

4.  Wash your inserts. The inserts placed in to your shoes are usually detachable and therefore can be washed without having to clean the whole shoe. Cleaning these regularly will reduce the risk of suffering from athlete’s foot, which is a fungal infection that flourishes in moisture rich places such as between the toes. You can prevent athlete’s foot by ensuring that your feet are dry before you put new socks on and that you always wear fresh socks when running.

If you notice that your feet itch in between your toes and soles, and your skin is starting to crack and dry out, you may already have athlete’s foot. You can catch it through direct contact or by walking over a damp area that has been walked on by someone with the condition. Public changing rooms and swimming pools are common places to pick up athletes foot as is wearing damp running shoes that aren’t fully dry or been washed properly.

5.  Use a foot powder. Baking soda, talc or foot powders with anti fungal properties can help to minimise the chances of suffering from smelly running shoes. Sprinkling this in to your trainers and massaging in between your toes and around the heel will help to absorb moisture and therefore prevent any bad odours from forming.
