#1  Wear layers of clothes as opposed to just one top. Running jackets can occasionally agitate the skin after a while, so wear a lightweight running vest or t shirt underneath.

If you’re wearing a waterproof jacket for running in the rain, the under garment you wear should be made of Coolmax or polypropylene to wick away sweat and moisture from the skin.

#2  Wear a wind proof, water proof jacket whenever you run when it's raining, but beware of using cheaper jackets as they will not only keep water out, but also hold moisture in, leaving you feeling clammy and cold.

#3  Wear a hat with a brim or peak to stop the rain from going in to your eyes. Rain running down your face can be very uncomfortable. If you happen to be wearing any hair products such as gel, hairspray, mousse or wax as they may mix with the rain and trickle in to your eyes.

Also if you're running in the rain in a built up area the chances are you'll have polluted rain which is very acidic, this could cause you a great deal of discomfort if it goes in your eyes.

#4  Wear bright and ideally reflective clothing when you’re running in the rain, because not only will your visibility be compromised, but also that of other road users. This will be especially true if there is heavy rainfall.

#5  Don’t overdress. Ok it’s raining, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s cold. If you wear too many thick layers without a rain proof racket, your clothing will get very heavy as it soaks up the rain making running more challenging. The key here is to dress according to the temperature of the day.

One last point to mention when you’ve been running in the rain is to take care of your running shoes by filling them up with crumpled newspaper rolled into balls. This keeps your shoes in good shape by drawing the moisture away from the fabric and insole.
