Choosing The Right Sports Bra For Running

There is one item of sportswear that all women should definitely invest in and that is a good sports bra. When buying one you’ll need to consider the fit and comfort as well as the amount of support you’ll get from it.

Obviously the larger breasts you have then the more support you’ll need.

Ideally you should buy your sports bra from a specialist running shop who will be able to provide you with a selection of quality options for you to choose from.

Here are my suggestions for selecting the best sports bra for you: -

  • When choosing a bra, the first thing you’ll have to consider is the level of support you’ll need. This will depend on the sport you’re taking part in. Obviously the more impact and bouncing around the activity involves then the more support you’re going to need from your bra.
  • When measuring the size of the bra, you’ll need to take a measurement from around the chest just below the breasts. Measuring here allows you to get a good reliable reading as you’ll be measuring over the firm part of your chest. It’s important that the under band of the bra fits snugly as this is the key to ensuring you feel supported.
  • If your bra moves around and tends to pull up at the back, then you've probably mismeasured and got the wrong size, so you’ll need to recheck the under band measurement again.
  • Next you need to assess your cup size. You’ll already have an idea as to what this is, but you’ll need to try some on first to make absolutely sure.  .
  • If you notice any extra space or loose material either under the cup or in front of the nipple then again you’ve got the wrong size bra and need to select a smaller one.
  • If on the other hand you notice any loose flesh spilling out towards the armpits, above the cup or around the straps, then your bra is too small.
  • If you find that your bra leaves a dark line or red mark and feels like it’s cutting in to your shoulders or your back then it isn’t a good fit and again you'll need to buy a new one a little bigger.
  • If you’re training for a specific race or event, try to train at least a few times in what you are going to wear on the day of the event so you can test how comfortable it is.
